Returning to Your Home After A Fire:
When you return to your home after a fire, be prepared for the emotional shock that comes with suffering a loss like this. Losing a portion of your home is not an insignificant event. Look to your support group or the American Red Cross for help.
After a home fire loss, make sure you call your insurance agent as soon as possible. If you are renting, contact the home owner or property Management Company. The responsible insurance adjuster will know what parts of the damage are insured and can give you many good pointers about your policy and what to do next.
What you’re responsible for after a fire: Property Protection
The moment that fire truck rolls out of your neighborhood, you are responsible for property protection – including the home. It’s your responsibility to secure the home. You may need to secure the doors, windows and any holes or access points from unauthorized entry.
If you can’t live in the home after a house fire, remove your valuables. Most insurance companies mandate property protection from personal and real damage and to prevent further damage. You may need to call a Disaster Restoration Company to mitigate further water or structural damage as well.
